What is 3D Archery? 3D archery involves shooting at life-like foam animal targets, originally designed for bowhunting practice but now a competitive sport. Courses feature a variety of animal targets, ranging from small to large, set at different distances and angles to simulate real hunting conditions. It is a fun and engaging way to improve archery skills while enjoying the outdoors.

Getting Started No special equipment is required—just a bow and field point arrows. Some archers use advanced gear, but success comes down to skill and practice. Events emphasize fun, safety, and sportsmanship, making them accessible to all skill levels.

3D Archery Events Events take place on outdoor courses with targets arranged at varying distances. Shooters must judge distances without aids unless permitted by specific divisions. Standard courses feature 22 to 28 targets, with large competitions requiring multiple-day scoring. Shooting positions vary, including elevated platforms and angled shots, and events proceed in all weather conditions.

Scoring & Rules Scoring is based on target vitals: 10 points for the smallest ring, 8 for vitals, and 5 for body shots. Some targets have multiple scoring areas, so clarification may be needed before shooting. Competitive events follow specific rules regarding target distances, shooting classes, and equipment regulations.

Etiquette & Safety

  • Safety first—be aware of surroundings and follow range rules.
  • Be courteous: avoid excessive talking, keep pace with the group, and allow faster groups to pass.
  • Each target should be shot within a reasonable time frame to keep the event moving smoothly.
  • Large events may use a shotgun start, assigning groups to different targets before beginning simultaneously.
  • Bring essentials like water, snacks, and spare equipment for a comfortable experience.

National & International Events

Competitive 3D archery follows structured formats, with standardized target distances based on age and skill level. Some events allow rangefinders, while top competitive divisions shoot unmarked distances. Major tournaments may adopt different scoring formats, but all focus on accuracy, skill, and fair play.
